Safety on the road

A HopnTravel trip can be four hours and three hundred miles with people you met that morning. Here's what we ask of everyone, what the app does while you're driving, and what happens if something goes wrong.

If you are in immediate danger

Call 911 first. Cohotrip is not an emergency service and we cannot dispatch police, fire or an ambulance. Your phone can, faster than we can.

Booking a seat

Travelling with people you haven't met

Every HopnTravel booking works this way, whether it's one seat or four.
In the driver app

The Safety Center

Everything a driver might need in a hurry, one tap from any screen.
  • Call 911 without leaving the app.
  • Alert my emergency contacts. Up to three people you choose get a text with your location, your vehicle and plate, and a link to follow you. It goes to them and nobody else — not to police, not to riders, not to other drivers.
  • Share my trip. A private link that shows your contacts where you are until you arrive. It keeps updating while your phone is locked, and stops the moment you end the trip.
  • Check-ins on long drives. Pick an interval and the app asks if you're OK. Miss one by more than fifteen minutes and your contacts are told, with your last known location.
  • No signal? An alert you send with no service is held on your phone and sends itself the moment you're back online, with the time you actually pressed it.
Before anyone drives

Every driver is checked

  • Driver's licence on file and verified
  • Vehicle registration on file
  • Current insurance on file
  • Phone number verified by text
  • Vehicle photographed, front and rear

Documents expire. When one does, the driver stops receiving trips until it's replaced.

Not allowed in the vehicle

Same on every Cohotrip and HopnTravel trip. It applies to drivers and passengers equally, and anyone can end a trip over any of it.
For riders

What we ask of you

  • Everyone in the car is named. Whoever booked has to be one of the passengers.
  • No unaccompanied minors. Anyone under 18 rides with an adult on the booking.
  • Check the car before you get in — the plate, the make and model, and the driver's photo all show in the app.
  • Seat belts, every seat.
  • A driver can end a trip that feels unsafe, and so can you. Neither of you owes the other an explanation in the moment.
For drivers

Your right to say no

  • You can decline any trip, at any point, for any reason that concerns your safety. It does not affect your rating and it does not count against you.
  • Check the name and photo before anyone gets in. If they don't match, decline and report it.
  • Don't take more passengers than were booked. If extra people appear, the booking is wrong — decline it.
  • Share your trip on long drives, especially overnight or out of town.
  • Keep your licence, registration and insurance current in the app.

Reporting something

Email support@cohotrip.com. Tell us the date, roughly when, and what happened. If you have the trip in your history, say which one.

We read every report. Depending on what happened we may suspend an account while we look into it, remove someone permanently, or pass information to police if they ask for it through the proper channel. We'll tell you what we did.

We would rather hear about something small than find out later it was the first of several.
